SEC Football by the Numbers: Alabama’s 2023 top 10

Alabama’s 2023 season ended with a 27-20 overtime loss to Michigan in the Rose Bowl on Monday. The Crimson Tide posted a 12-2 record for the 2023 season, which included the SC championship. Here are 10 numbers to illustrate Alabama’s 2023 campaign:

0 Team in the nation played a tougher schedule than Alabama this season, according to the NCAA. Alabama’s NCAA FBS opponents combined for a 115-53 record – a .685 winning percentage – in their games against other NCAA FBS opponents (other than Alabama).

1 Major-college football program has had two coaches with 200 victories. Alabama’s 24-21 victory over Arkansas on Oct. 14 was the 200th for coach Nick Saban with the Crimson Tide. By raising his on-the-field record to 200-28 at Alabama, Saban joined Paul “Bear” Bryant, who had a 224-42-9 record with the Tide from 1958 through 1982, as 200-game winners with the program. (Saban finished the season at 206-29, although his official record is 201-29 due to five vacated victories in 2007, his first season with Alabama, due to NCAA sanctions.) Nine other coaches have won at least 200 games at one major-college program — Penn State’s Joe Paterno with 409 victories, Florida State’s Bobby Bowden with 304, BYU’s LaVell Edwards with 257, Nebraska’s Tom Osborne with 255, Chicago’s Amos Alonzo Stagg with 244, Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer with 238, Kansas State’s Bill Snyder with 215, Ohio State’s Woody Hayes with 205 and Georgia’s Vince Dooley with 201.

3 Rushing TDs and 3 passing TDs for Alabama QB Jalen Milroe in the Crimson Tide’s 49-21 victory over Kentucky on Nov. 11. He became the fifth SEC player to have at least three TD runs and three TD passes in a non-overtime conference game. Against Kentucky, Milroe completed 15-of-22 passes for 234 yards and ran eight times for 41 yards as he became the third Alabama player to be responsible for at least six TDs in a game, following Tua Tagovailoa, who had six TD passes and one TD run in a 59-31 victory over Ole Miss on Sept. 28, 2019, and five TD passes and one TD run in a 52-21 victory over Auburn on Nov. 24, 2018, and Bryce Young, who had five TD passes and one TD run in a 55-0 victory over Utah State on Sept. 3, 2022. During the season, Milroe also became the second Alabama player with at least 150 rushing yards and 150 passing yards in the same game, when he produced 219 passing yards and 155 rushing yards in a 42-28 victory over LSU on Nov. 4. The first Alabama player with a 150/150 game was QB Tyler Watts, who had 231 passing yards and 162 rushing yards in a 37-36 loss to South Carolina on Sept. 29, 2001. Milroe ran for four TDs against LSU, becoming the ninth Alabama player with at least four rushing TDs in one game (with Shaun Alexander doing it twice). Milroe is the only quarterback on the list. Milroe had 259 passing yards and 107 rushing yards in a 27-24 victory over Auburn on Nov. 25 to become the second Alabama player with at least 250 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in the same game. QB Jalen Hurts had 347 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in a 51-3 victory over Mississippi State on Nov. 12, 2016. And when Milroe completed 13-of-18 passes for 194 yards with three TDs and no interceptions and ran for 64 yards and two TDs on seven carries in a 56-7 victory over Middle Tennessee on Sept. 2, he became the first Alabama player with three TD passes and two TD runs in the same game.

7 Consecutive Alabama quarterbacks have played for SEC championship teams in their first seasons as the full-time starter, with Jalen Milroe joining the list this season. Blake Sims in 2014, Jake Coker in 2015, Jalen Hurts in 2016, Tua Tagovailoa in 2018, Mac Jones in 2020 and Bryce Young in 2021 went from their first season-opening start to winning the SEC championship. The most recent Alabama quarterback who didn’t accomplish that was AJ McCarron in 2011. While the Tide did not win the SEC title that season, it did win the CFP national championship for 2011.

17 Years since Alabama lost to a team that finished the season with a losing record, the longest such streak in the nation. Alabama lost to Mississippi State 24-16 on Nov. 4, 2006, a season in which the Bulldogs posted a 3-9 record. Since that defeat, Alabama has lost 32 games, and the Crimson Tide’s opponent in each of those setbacks went on to have at least a .500 season. This season, Alabama lost to Texas 34-24 on Sept. 9 and Michigan 27-20 in overtime in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. Texas finished 12-2, and Michigan has a 14-0 record entering Monday night’s CFP national-championship game against Washington.

30 SEC championships for Alabama after the Crimson Tide defeated Georgia 27-24 in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 2. Alabama also won the SEC title game in 1992, 1999, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021. Before the championship game began in 1992, Alabama won SEC crowns in 1933, 1937, 1945, 1953, 1964, 1965, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978 and 1979 and tied for conference championships in 1934, 1961, 1966, 1981 and 1989.

32 Seconds remained when Alabama QB Jalen Milroe connected with WR Isaiah Bond for a 31-yard TD pass that lifted the Crimson Tide to a 27-24 victory over Auburn on Nov. 25. The completion was the latest touchdown scored by Alabama while trailing to win a non-overtime game since QB John Parker Wilson threw 4 yards to WR Matt Caddell with eight seconds left in a 41-38 victory over Arkansas on Sept. 15, 2007. The Milroe-to-Bond pass came on a fourth-and-goal snap after the Tide had converted on fourth-and-1 in the series.

57 Consecutive non-conference regular-season games had been won by Alabama — the longest streak in the nation during the SEC era – until the Crimson Tide lost to Texas 34-24 on Sept. 9. The Longhorns overcame Alabama by becoming the first team to score 21 fourth-quarter points against the Tide since Clemson in its 35-31 victory in the CFP national championship game on Jan. 9, 2017. Alabama’s previous loss in a non-conference regular-season game came on Nov. 17, 2007, when Louisiana-Monroe scored a 21-14 upset. The loss to Texas ended several other national-best streaks owned by Alabama. The Tide had won 35 consecutive September non-conference home games since a 19-16 setback against Northern Illinois on Sept. 20, 2003. Dating to the loss to ULM, Alabama had defeated 43 consecutive non-conference opponents in Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Tide had won 29 consecutive September games since a 43-37 loss to Ole Miss on Sept. 19, 2015. And Alabama had won 21 consecutive games at home since a 46-41 loss to LSU on Nov. 9, 2019.

85 Yards were covered by Alabama S Caleb Downs on the first punt return of his career in the Crimson Tide’s 66-10 victory over Chattanooga on Nov. 18. After Alabama’s Kool-Aid McKinstry fumbled on a punt return in the first quarter, Downs went back to field punts. Following two fair catches, Downs went 85 yards for a touchdown with 4:59 left in the third quarter.

547 Points were scored at Alabama by K Will Reichard to become the leading scorer in college football history. He surpassed Navy QB Keenan Reynolds, who scored 530 points from 2012 through 2015, as the leading scorer in NCAA FBS history.
